Shure MV5 is shaped like a ball with a diameter of about 2.6 inches and a weight of about 90 grams without the mounting stand. The pattern of the grille is similar to that of the legendary ‘Elvis microphone’. It does look nice and stylish. However, both the body and grille are made of plastic, so they aren’t very durable. The mic comes with a mounting stand and everything you need to get started right away. The mounting stand is made of duralumin, and is capable of doing a good job in suspending the mic. You can adjust the mic’s position by adjusting the nut. You can easily carry the mic along with the accessories wherever you go.
One of the best things about Shure MV5 is that it is compatible with virtually any device. It features a micro USB output and comes with the suitable cables for connecting to a USB connector or a Lightning connector. In other words, Shure MV5 can work with Windows, Linux, and Mac. In addition, Shure says that it is compatible with Android and iOS devices. The versatile connectivity makes this mic suitable for people who often work with different platforms.
On the back, there is also a 3.5 mm headphone port for real-time monitoring. This is very handy for direct monitoring while you are recording. There is a control knob for adjusting the headphone volume.
However, it has no on-board control for adjusting the gain level – to adjust the gain level, you need to access the mic’s settings on your computer or on the mobile app. Fortunately, you don’t really need to tinker with the settings as Shure MV5 already sounds good right out of the box.
Shure MV5 is surprisingly able to deliver decent sound quality. The dynamic range is good, and it can handle high SPL easily without clipping. It has low noise levels, ensuring good sound clarity. Well, the clarity is still not comparable to those high-end mics, but it is definitely good enough to be usable and useful. There is no hiss that is often associated with cheap mics.
Shure MV5 has a cardioid polar pattern. It does a good job in focusing on the source while attenuating environmental noise. The sound accuracy is good, thanks to the wide frequency response range. The built-in A/D converter also ensures good sound quality.
Shure MV5 comes with three built-in DSP presets. They are actually useful for their intended purposes. These presets allow lower compression levels and some EQ touches that enhance the brightness. If you prefer raw or unprocessed output, you can use the ‘flat’ preset and tweak the EQ later in the software.
